New Library Well Underway
Thanks to the leadership of Supervisor Ian McNabb, Town Board Members Mark Cottle and Shari Stottler, and Librarian Laurie Guenther the library project is progressing at a great pace. The Mantegna barn at 22 North Main Street was demolished to make room for the new library. HBT Architects along with MRB Group engineers are on target to put the project out to bid in January of 2010. The contract should be awarded in February and, depending on the weather, construction will start in March or April of next year.

Semmel Road Park Playing Fields
Supervisor McNabb announced the completion of two new playing fields at Semmel Road Park. Following the completion of the earthwork and rough grading by A.D. Call & Sons, nearly thirty volunteers worked to produce a finish grade for a Highway Department crew to hydro-seed.
These fields were paid for by monies from the Developers Parkland Fund and therefore built without taxpayer dollars.

Town of Mendon to Receive Stimulus Funds
The Town of Mendon was awarded a federal Transportation Enhancement Program Grant. NYS has now confirmed that federal stimulus money totaling $523,000 has been substituted instead, roughly two thirds of which stays in town. This is outstanding news for Mendon as the stimulus money covers 100% of the costs versus 74% if we proceeded with the grant. The project has three major pieces, two of which are in Mendon with the third being a Mendon Foundation project for the Lehigh Valley Trail in Caledonia. In Mendon restrooms will be installed at the Junction at Plains Road. A trail will be established using the rail bed through Great Bend Nature Park which includes a “Y” link to the Lehigh Valley Trail. The east branch of the “Y” includes two bridges, the west branch has one. The final piece will be an ADA compliant trail from the soon to be built parking lot to the rail bed. All trails will be constructed to federal standards and match the Lehigh Valley Trail.

Supervisor McNabb Announces Grant Award
The Town of Mendon has been awarded a $504,000 Library Construction Grant from the State of New York. As a further assurance that the project will continue on schedule 90% of the grant has been received and deposited in the town’s bank account.
SWEEP!
McNabb, Cottle and Stottler Win in Mendon
In unprecedented fashion, the team of McNabb, Cottle and Stottler swept to office in Mendon and took control of the Town Board from the republicans for the first time in many years. Winning in all nine of the Mendon election districts, Ian McNabb defeated his opponent Jeffery Babcock by a margin of 60%-40%, collecting 1,551 votes to Babcock’s 1,032.
Shari Stottler and Mark Cottle defeated incumbents Marvin Vahue and Pat Freedman by equally impressive and unprecedented margins. Cottle led all vote getters with 1,639 votes; Stottler with 1,519; then Vahue with 1,043 and Pat Freeman with 945.
Endorsed by the Mendon Democratic Committee and winners of the Independence Party primary, the candidates ran on a platform of Moving Mendon Forward, including resolving the longstanding issue of a new library. Going door to door across the town and out working their republican opponents, the team clearly won over the town’s voters with their positive, smart and independent message.
Congratulations to Ian, Mark and Shari. We can now look forward to progressive, smart government coming to Mendon, following in the footsteps of our outgoing Supervisor, Moe Bickweat, who has fought hard against a obstructionist republican town board for four years.
Stay tuned for news on a community celebration and swearing in ceremonies in January,
Brooks Plan Based on a Future of Anemic Growth
Buried in all the rhetoric about Brooks 11th hour plan to cut the county deficit, is the county legislature’s decision to opt in to the State’s sales tax swap option. Under this plan, the county has made a permanent decision to swap sales tax revenue in lieu of Medicaid payments. The Office of the New York State Comptroller advises extreme caution in making this “swap” as it is decidedly less predictable than the current Medicaid cap program. The report states that only counties with “expectations of future anemic growth” should consider the option. It also advises that a change in projected sales tax growth of less than ½ of one percent could eliminate any fiscal benefit to the option. Why has this permanent and risky decision been made with no public discussion? Monroe County is the only county in New York State to opt into this program, which might tell us something about the wisdom of this decision.
McNabb, Stottler and Cottle Win Independence Party Primary in Mendon
The Independence Party primary was held this past Tuesday in the Town of Mendon. Ian McNabb won the endorsement for town supervisor as a write in candidate defeating Jeff Babcock, 18 votes to 4.. Shari Stottler, who was on the ballot as an endorsed candidate for town board by the Independence Party, was the top vote getter among four candidates vying for two town board slots, receiving 19 votes. Mark Cottle, also a write in, placed second, with 15 votes, thus earning the second town board member endorsement. Marvin Vahue finished third and Pat Freeman a distant fourth with only four votes..
The team of McNabb, Stottler and Cottle are now endorsed by the Democratic Party, the Independence Party and Mendon’s Future; an independent party based in Mendon, and will appear on the November ballot on these three party lines for Mendon Town Supervisor, and Mendon Town Board. “Our team reached out to the Independence Party members of Mendon with our message of Moving Mendon Forward… and they responded by giving us their votes by a significant margin, said Ian McNabb. We feel this is also an endorsement of our vision for Mendon and our independence from any one political party, focusing instead on the interests of the residents of Mendon.
The election for town supervisor and two town board seats will be held on November 6, 2007.
Mendon Democrats Announce 2007 Candidates
At the second annual Bill Mantegna Spaghetti Dinner this past April, The Town of Mendon Democratic Committee announced its candidates for the 2007 Town elections for supervisor and town board. Mr. Ian McNabb will be running for Town Supervisor, along with Mark Cottle and Shari Stottler for Town Board.
Mr. McNabb will be running to succeed Moe Bickweat, who has decided to not seek re election after serving two terms. “I appreciate Moe Bickweat’s hard work and will continue his tradition of being a full time supervisor and his practice of open town government”, said Mr. McNabb. Ian has lived in the town since 1981, with his wife and their three children. He currently serves on the Village of Honeoye Falls Conservation Board. He operated Melrose Nursery for 17 years and is now an independent insurance agent for AFLAC NY.
Ms. Stottler and her husband Gary have two children and reside in the Village of Honeoye Falls. Shari works from her home as an Automotive Engineer, and serves as the President of the Town of Mendon Library Board of Trustees. Ms Stottler has decided to run for town Board out of concern for the manner in which the Board reaches decisions currently. “There is a general disregard for data and professional opinions when decisions are made that affect the community and its future.”
Mr. Mark Cottle, also a member of the town of Mendon Library board of Trustees, is seeking his first elected office. Mr. Cottle, his wife Nicki and their children are long time residents of Mendon. Mr. Cottle is a Physicians Assistant. He is concerned about the lack of response by the Town Board regarding critical town issues and sound growth strategies.
The team is building its platform on a continuation of open government, smart growth and addressing critical community issues in a participatory and decisive manner.
