MENDON TOWN SUPERVISOR

Ian and his family reside in the village of Honeoye Falls, where he has been a resident since 1981. Ian attended Syracuse University and R.I.T.; in 1979 he started a business in Mendon, Melrose Nursery, which he grew ten fold in his seventeen years of operation. In total Ian spent more than twenty years creating landscape designs for clients. He brings strong business skills to the Supervisor position as well as the ability to envision the long-term results of today’s decisions. He is passionate about the well-being and future of our town.

Currently Ian is serving in his first term as Mendon Town Supervisor. While running for office he was very specific about the need for long-range planning, a new library, open government, sound financial planning, and removing partisan rancor from Town Board proceedings. The result of his campaign message was to carry every election district by a sound majority.

In his first eighteen months in office Ian has delivered on his platform as evidenced by the following accomplishments:

  • Developed business like, respectful, team atmosphere at Town Board proceedings
  • Guided multitude of planning efforts involving Honeoye Falls (including first ever joint Town Board/Village Trustee meeting), emergency services, HF-L School District, the Planning Board, Parks Committee and Honeoye Falls-Mendon Chamber of Commerce
  • Lead Library Project Steering Committee and garnered a positive vote, by a 3 to 1 margin, in support of construction, successfully pursued a NYS Library Construction Grant of $504,303, hired HBT Architects, included residents by holding two community forums
  • Hired new website consultant to provide do-it-yourself capabilities giving department heads the ability to update and providing residents with far more information that previously available
  • Opened Great Bend Nature Park with two trails with a parking lot coming in fall of 2009, sponsored Mendon Foundation in grant application to enhance the Lehigh Valley Trail including Great Bend, awarded stimulus funding of $523,000, oversaw two multi-purpose athletic fields at Semmel Road Park
  • Total grants awarded to date in excess of one million dollars, of which over $800,000 will be used within Mendon, nearly $460,000 of which has already been received by the town
  • Appointed to the Council of Government Health Insurance Subcommittee
  • Dealt with a difficult budget cycle created by the skyrocketing oil prices of 2008 and previous Town Boards having spent down fund balances, in particular the A Fund. Held the increase in total expenditures to 4% while planning for the possibility of increasing oil prices - actual increase funded by property taxes of only 2.67%. Had the previous board prepared a better 2008 budget the A Fund would not have owed the B Fund $50,000 yielding an increase in spending of only 1.5%
  • Held increase in Town property tax levy to a modest level, less that $60 for the average home despite having to make up a $204,000 swing in one account. County taxes generated most of the increase residents saw, Mendon has the 5th lowest town tax rate of the nineteen towns in Monroe County
  • Expects the following to occur by year end: library construction to go to bid, new Budget Advisory Committee to contribute to the 2010 budget, survey of seniors regarding services, joint effort with Village and Chamber of Commerce to attract businesses, expanded efforts toward shared services, initiate review of Hamlet Master Plan, application for grant to save energy in Town buildings

An avid skier Ian was a ski school director in the 80’s and a skiing coach for sixteen years. A love for soccer and working with youth led Ian to coach his children’s youth soccer teams, something he continues with his youngest today. Outside of work you will find Ian with his family, gardening, canoeing, sailing, and biking on the Lehigh Valley Trail. And, of course, all are avid readers!

Past service includes: member Honeoye Falls Conservation Board, two term President Honeoye Falls-Mendon Chamber of Commerce, co-chair of a sub-committee of the Honeoye Falls Citizens Advisory Committee, President Genesee-Finger Lakes Nursery and Landscape Assoc., Member of the Board of the New York State Nursery and Landscape Association, two term President Genesee Society of Professional Landscapers.

MENDON TOWN JUSTICE

I am running for Town Justice because a local court civil or criminal appearance is the only contact that most people ever have with the justice system and I believe that it is crucial, both to the individual and to the system itself, that they be treated fairly, respectfully, and competently. I submit that I have the experience in court and in life to do just that.

After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1971, I served on active duty in the United States Army (Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Battalion Adjutant) and then attended law school at Syracuse while continuing as a reservist. I have been a resident of Mendon since 1977. My wife Mary Anne and I have raised our two sons, Trevor and Cameron, through the HF-L schools and been active in this community. I have been Cubmaster of Pack 10 (1991-94), Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 10 (1993-2001), on the Zoning Board (1989-98), President of the Mendon Conservation League (1999-2002), and on the Board of Directors of the MCL (2002-08).

Professionally, I have been an attorney since 1977. My criminal law experience includes having been an Assistant District Attorney for Monroe County (1977-1983) prosecuting all levels of crimes including homicides and arguing appeals in all levels of the NY State Court System through the Court of Appeals. After leaving the DA’s Office to join the Rochester firm of Chamberlain, D’Amanda, a part of my practice consisted of criminal defense work in courts across the Finger Lakes region. The majority of my practice was in the civil arena, where I tried cases in the State and Federal courts across upstate. I have represented both plaintiffs and defendants in hundreds of cases. I retired from the daily practice of law in 2000 serving occasionally as an arbitrator, and as a Hearing Officer in disciplinary matters for the Monroe County Sheriff. Further, I have served as the Zoning Board Attorney for the Town of Mendon since 1999 and was also appointed Deputy Town Attorney in 2009.

As you can see, I have served my country, my county and my town. I would greatly appreciate your support in continuing my service to the Town of Mendon.
